This is the "adult" pool. No, it's not called adult because of any "adult" activity but rather because it is reserved for adults only.
This is the family pool. There is a diving board in the deep end along with a kiddie slide. A life guard is always on duty here.
Coral Sands Beach. This is a natural sand beach and as such has very soft, powdery sand. Strangely, there is rarely anyone there so it's a good place to get away.
Emon Beach. This beach is somewhat un-natural since the jetty (right) had to be built to keep the sand in place. It is the most popular beach, probably since it's close to housing.
Another view of Emon Beach. You can see the play area and the pavilions that can be rented for cook-outs. Emon beach is where most outdoor events, like holiday celebrations, take place.
The Kwaj Marina. This is where you can rent boats for recreation (diving, fishing, snorkeling, sailing). A license is required to operate boats on Kwaj - even private boats.
Richardson Theatre. Obviously it is an outdoor theatre and is quite relaxing. They play movies up through PG-13. R movies are shown at "The Yuk" which is open air but enclosed.
The rope swing at Coral Sands beach.
The Turtle Pond.
Locations
Kwajalein International Airport. It's no O'Hare, but it gets us out of here!
Check in might be a little less formal than you are used to - but, hey, this is Kwaj!
The "downtown" area with most of the retail facilities, the post office, and a convience store called Ten-ten.
This is what I knew to be the High School, but I hear the schools have been consolidated, so this may be all grades now.
Kwajalein Hospital. You don't want to have to have brain surgery but they can take care of most medical emergencies.
The Japanese cemetary. This is but one of the many WWII monuments on Kwajalein Atoll.
Looking across the lagoon toward the west end of the island from near the marina
"Mt. Olympus" is the highest point on Kwajalein at about 20 feet (my guess).
The Kwaj Post Office. This is the hub of activity when mail arrives (about twice/week).
The sign near Kwajalein Airport. It reminds us how far we are from everything - literally.
"Surfway" is the only grocery store on Kwaj. They have most everything we need but little or no choice. If you want tortilla chips, for example, there is only one kind.
It's a little quirk of Kwaj, but when done shopping you just push your cart out to this van and they deliver your bags to your door.
Housing
This is a 400-series house, aka a "hard house." This is the type of house we had on our first tour. In fact, this is the house we had.
Bachelor Quarters (or BQ's) are hotel/dorm style quarters for single folks. They are fairly good size with private baths and laundry facilities. Such residents also get "free" meal cards.
Dome houses are the newest form of housing on Kwaj and what we lived in last. In fact, this is the one we lived in. They are fairly small but clean, new and the rent is the same! (Ie... free).
So called "new housing". They were built in the 80s and are falling down and prone to mold infestation. We lived in one for about 6 mos before the mold got too bad.
I don't know what to call these other than what they look like: townhouses. We have never lived in one but from what I hear, they are OK. There are only about 10 or so of these.
Trailers were home to some single people, married couples and single's who room together. They were getting rid of these when we left in 07, so they may all be gone by now.
